Search for Yetis from Doctor Who

It sounds like it could be a story-line from Doctor Who.

But the search for the long-lost Yetis from the programme is actually taking place in north Wales.

Actors who starred as Yetis in the 1967 series The Abominable Snowmen are being offered free tickets to a live screening of the new series.

The location scenes of the programmes, starring second Doctor Patrick Troughton, were filmed at Nant Ffrancon Pass in Snowdonia.

The Yetis appeared in a six-part adventure and led to actors in padded fur-covered costumes roaming the north Wales countryside.

Five of the episodes The Abominable Snowmen are among 106 episodes of Doctor Who missing from the archives.

All that remains are two short clips, off-screen telesnaps and a reel-to-reel tape recording of the soundtrack, made by a viewer in 1967.

Actor Frazer Hines, who played the Doctor's assistant, Jamie McCrimmon, and director Gerald Blake also each made short home movies of the location filming.

Production photographs show actor Reg Whitehead in the Yeti costume. Three others are also credited with the role, in addition to technical and support staff.

The Odeon cinema at Eagles Meadow in Wrexham is trying to trace anybody who played a role in the programmes shot in Gwynedd nearly 50 years ago, either as an actor, extra or production crew.

Manager Kenny Kempster said: "There is already a phenomenal amount of interest in the live screening because Dr Who has such a huge and loyal fan base who can't wait to see it on the big screen."

Peter Capaldi will be the 12th Doctor when the series returns on 23 August.
