Former US Senator Gary Hart is expected to arrive back in Belfast later for talks with the Stormont parties.
It is understood Senator Hart will be in Northern Ireland throughout this week.
Last week, Secretary of State Teresa Villiers, who is chairing the talks, said she thought there was only a slim chance of a deal.
However, later she qualified this, saying that the negotiations may have reached a turning point.
The talks are aimed at resolving difficulties among the five parties in the devolved Stormont government.
The negotiators are considering the problems of flags, parades and the legacy of the Troubles.
