Icy roads warning after snowfall

Written By blogger on Saturday, December 27, 2014 | 12:59 AM

Motorists have been warned of treacherous driving conditions in parts of Wales following a night of snow, rain and plummeting temperatures.

In many places it dipped below freezing, and the Met Office has issued a yellow "be aware" warning for ice.

Gritters were dispatched, but travel disruption is expected on Saturday.

The areas worst affected by ice are Ceredigion, Conwy, Carmarthenshire, Powys, Gwynedd, Monmouthshire, Denbighshire, Wrexham and Flintshire.

Drivers are advised to take care as icy stretches continue following a spate of crashes on Friday, including on the M4, A470 and mountain roads.

Parts of Wrexham and Flintshire have seen snowfall and road incidents on Friday included:

  • The A470 was reported to be impassable for a time near Dolgellau, Gwynedd
  • Three people were treated by paramedics after a car skidded off the M4 westbound between Pyle and Margam at 15:18 GMT
  • Fire crews also responded to a crash involving four cars on the M4 westbound between Pencoed and Sarn at 14:49 GMT
  • A car overturned on the Rhigos mountain at around the same time, Fire crews from Treorchy and Hirwaun made the vehicle safe
  • Another car collided with the central reservation on the A470 northbound near Pontypridd at 14:06 GMT, with one person being treated by ambulance crews
