Man's 'windpipe was cut' in stabbing

Written By blogger on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 | 2:24 AM

A central Manchester stabbing victim was attacked with such ferocity that "his windpipe was cut", police said.

Officers said the 40-year-old man, who suffered stomach and neck wounds, was lucky to have survived the assault in Piccadilly Gardens on 24 November.

His attacker is described as a black male, aged between 16 and 21, with scars on his face.

Police believe the victim, who remains in a stable condition, was specifically targeted in the 22:20 GMT incident.

Det Insp Liam Boden said: "It is fortunate we are not investigating this as a murder.

"While we are continuing to explore all avenues in respect of a possible motive what I would say is that this was not a random attack."

The incident caused significant disruption to Metrolink services the following morning as forensic officers examined evidence on a section of the tram lines.
