British man killed in South Sudan

Written By blogger on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 | 5:34 AM

A British man has been killed in South Sudan, the Foreign Office has said.

The BBC understands the man was shot dead at a compound of the Carter Center - a human rights organisation where the victim worked - in the capital Juba.

Anne Soy, BBC Africa reporter, said a presidential spokesman had confirmed that several people had been questioned but the gunman had not been found.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it was providing consular assistance to the man's family.

Our reporter said a car was believed to have followed the British man into the Carter Centre compound. A man then got out of the trailing car, shot the victim dead and left the scene, she added.

Among the people to have been questioned was a security guard who was on duty at the compound during the incident.

The attack comes amid continued fighting in South Sudan between government and rebel forces.

The Carter Center, set up by former US president Jimmy Carter, is working in several areas of South Sudan.
