Mothers-to-be across north Wales could be forced to travel to Gwynedd and Wrexham if they get into difficulties during labour.

According to two assembly members, consultant-led care at Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire could be suspended for a year.

The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is meeting on Tuesday.

The board has confirmed it will debate "the sustainability of the service at Glan Clwyd during its discussions.

Details of the proposals were released in a joint statement by the Vale of Clwyd AM Ann Jones and Clwyd West AM Darren Millar.

The politicians said they were informed on Monday that the plans will see more complex births transferred to either Wrexham Maelor or Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.

Last year the Welsh government decided intensive care services for babies in north Wales should be centralised at Glan Clwyd.

Maternity services have been the subject of a controversial health board review focussing on the region's three district hospitals.
