Day two of NI election counts

Written By blogger on Saturday, May 24, 2014 | 1:13 AM

A second day of counting in the local government elections is due to get under way across Northern Ireland.

The make-up of the 11 new super councils should be known by Saturday evening and all the results are available here.

The DUP has returned the most number of councillors so far.

More than 900 people are competing to fill 462 council seats. About half of the seats are still to be counted.

Unionists are expected to win control of six of the councils, nationalists are expected to win four with Alliance likely to hold the balance of power in Belfast.

As NI21 candidate Tina McKenzie polled 256 votes in Belfast's Balmoral DEA, she told the Irish News on Friday night that she was finished with having an active role in politics.

Later today, the new face of local government will emerge with the DUP and Sinn Féin on course to seize most of the 462 seats.

The Ulster Unionist party has held its own so far - a relief for the leader Mike Nesbitt in his first electoral test.

The SDLP's leader Alasdair McDonnell will be hoping for some positive results in key battlegrounds such as Newry Mourne and Down. The party is being squeezed in Derry where three targets seats are expected to go to independents, among them republican Gary Donnelly a member of the 32 County Sovereignty Committee.

Alliance has been buoyed by its first victory in the north of the city in 13 years.

The TUV leader Jim Allister is predicting his party will emerge with seats in double figures.

She said she would remain a party member and a supporter of the concept of NI21, but wanted to step back and concentrate on her family and business.

It follows allegations that party leader Basil McCrea made inappropriate sexual advances to Ashleigh Murray, 23, a former party worker.

Mr McCrea has denied the claims that emerged on polling day.

However deputy leader John McCallister said that he could not stay in his role.

In Sperrin DEA, Derry & Strabane, counting is beginning for the third time on Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, in Newry, Down and Ards, counting continued late into the night. The Slieve Gullion DEA had to be recounted amid talk of a couple of dozen missing votes.

BBC NI reporter Conor Macauley said: "The 25 missing votes in Slieve Gullion DEA have now been reconciled. The last seat will be sorted on Saturday morning."

In the European election, the results will not be known until Monday when all 28 countries have voted.

Ten candidates are in the race for Northern Ireland's three seats in the European parliament.
